After Deadly Crash, Calabasas Considers Speed Cameras
Mayor voiced frustration over police enforcement.

Calabasas is considering installing automated speed cameras on Mulholland Highway, following the death last month of two men in a high-speed crash.
In a meeting last month, resident Jolie Fer told the Calabasas City Council she could "no longer ignore the crisis on Mulholland Highway," describing increasingly dangerous drivers.
Just hours after the [deaths of the two men in June](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/2-killed-in-high-speed-crash-on-mulholland-highway/), Fer said, another driver swerved around her parents' stopped car, and ran the red light.
The complaints echo a [decades-old problem on Mulholland](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-01-09/the-snake-mulholland-highway-reopens-residents-drivers-clash), whose winding roads have long drawn thrill seekers and street racers. County supervisors [banned roadside stopping](https://www.theacorn.com/articles/county-cracks-down-on-gawkers-watching-mulholland-highway-races/) on part of the highway in 2016, to break up races that routinely drew spectators.
Fer asked the city to pursue the same fix Malibu adopted after four Pepperdine students were killed on PCH: automated speed cameras, which photograph and ticket speeding vehicles around the clock. Malibu is set to become [just the third city](https://www.stringermalibu.com/article/speeding-cameras-revenue-malibu?from=edition-malibu) in California with the cameras, under a state pilot program.
The council [appeared to agree](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ZINi7Jdd8&list=PLK_n_5OLuRnfUNwg0Vo9YOksfQpvZphDN&index=1&t=29s) with Fer. Councilmember Alicia Weintraub, requesting the item return for a formal discussion, said residents call the sheriff's department nightly without response.
"I said someone's going to die on Mulholland Highway, and two people did," she said.
Mayor James Bozajian echoed the sentiment, voicing frustration that not more had been done in the past. The council has requested action "over multiple years" and "multiple captains" without seeing results, he said.
"There needs to be a little bit of accountability."
