Topanga's role in the 1960s counterculture movement might define its legacy. But the canyon town's earlier history informs much of its architecture.

When Topanga Canyon Blvd. opened in 1915, it transformed a canyon accessible only by horse into one of L.A.'s hottest motor tourism destinations. Fifteen years before PCH opened up Malibu, middle-class Angelenos were already building craftsman-style bungalows on stilts in the Topanga woods. Hollywood soon followed: by 1924, Cecil B. DeMille had built a mansion in the canyon.

Unlike Malibu, where most of those early homes are long gone, some still stand in Topanga. Here are some favorites on the market.
