A fisherman was yanked off the Santa Monica Pier by a baby shark he'd just hooked, video circulating on social media appears to show.
The clip, originally shared by the @california.local Instagram, captures the chaotic rescue that followed, as the man's family quickly rescued him from the water with a rope.
The original Instagram account suggests the shark was a great white, which [have been spotted](https://smmirror.com/adult-great-white-spotted-close-to-shore-in-santa-monica-waters/) around the Santa Monica Pier in the past.
According to the [California Post](https://nypost.com/2026/07/13/us-news/fisherman-dragged-off-santa-monica-pier-by-baby-shark-video/), the man had just caught a baby shark, who possibly a great white, the man had hooked a juvenile shark that proved too heavy, dragging his line — and then him — under the pier.
The pier has drawn anglers for more than a century, in part because no fishing license is required there. Health officials, however, have long warned against eating certain species caught nearby, citing toxic levels of mercury and PCBs in the water.
