Malibu Driveway Collapses Into 30-Foot Sinkhole

Waves could be seen crashing beneath the home through the massive hole

A driveway in Malibu collapsed into a massive sinkhole early this morning, after days of high surf pounding the Southern California coast, [KTLA is reporting](https://ktla.com/news/local-news/malibu-driveway-collapse-sinkhole/amp/).

County fire crews responded to a suspected gas main break on Sea Level Drive, in the Lechuza Beach area, around 5:45 a.m. They arrived to find the home's driveway had collapsed into a sinkhole caused by coastal erosion, estimated at about 30 feet by 30 feet.

News helicopter footage showed waves crashing beneath the home, visible through the hole. No injuries were reported, and the house, which appeared to be under renovation, was reportedly unoccupied at the time.

No evacuations were ordered, and the gas company was on scene this morning working to repair the main.

The collapse comes amid days of dangerous surf churned up by former Hurricane Marie, which has battered the coastline since developing in the Pacific. The National Weather Service's high surf and coastal flood advisories are set to expire at 11 p.m. tonight.
