Marmalade Cafe Closes After 28 Years

The Calabasas outpost was a Commons original.

The Marmalade Cafe at The Commons served its final meals Sunday, ending a nearly three-decade run in Calabasas.

The casual California eatery was a Commons original, originally opening with the center in 1998. The chain itself dates to 1990, when it launched as a small [bakery and grab-and-go counter](https://nypost.com/2026/07/29/lifestyle/eight-beloved-la-eateries-close-including-a-celeb-hotspot/) on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. Its founders sold the business in 2007.

Management didn't give an official reason for the closure. But local reporting pointed to ongoing construction at The Commons, and the parking shortages and lost foot traffic that came with it, as likely factors. One employee reportedly blamed the location's steep rent, said to be around $65,000 a month, along with the construction headaches, and staff were reportedly given only days' notice before the shutdown.

The Calabasas closure caps a rough stretch for the chain. Its [Santa Monica location quietly went dark last week](https://santamonicasun.com/business/marmalade-cafe-closed/), and the Original Farmers Market outpost closed earlier this year without announcement. Locations in Westlake Village, Malibu, Sherman Oaks and El Segundo remain open.
