Speeding Cameras Going up on PCH

Malibu is only the 3rd CA city to join the pilot program.

The speed cameras are no longer hypothetical. Contractors have begun potholing and boring along PCH for Malibu's five automated speed enforcement camera sites, public works staff told the city's Public Works Commission this week, with installation estimated to finish in September.

The five enforcement zones span the length of the city: near Decker Canyon Road, the Morning View Drive area, Latigo Canyon Road, the Carbon Beach Terrace area, and near Trancas Canyon. Drivers may already be seeing crews at the western sites, where morning work has started.

The cameras will [make Malibu just the third city](https://www.stringermalibu.com/article/speeding-cameras-revenue-malibu?from=edition-malibu) in California with automated speed enforcement, under a five-year state pilot program. A City Council report estimated they could net the city upwards of $1.5 million a year, with much of it earmarked for CHP patrols and PCH safety improvements.

The camera work is part of a broader [PCH signal synchronization](https://www.malibucity.org/780/PCH-Signal-Synchronization) project that staff described as the umbrella for the corridor's safety upgrades.

Once the cameras go live, drivers caught exceeding the limit by more than 10 MPH will be photographed and ticketed automatically.
